Even as Astra thought of forcing Fred into killing her, both she and Fred
heard the sound of a horse coming closer. Within moments they saw an old
man riding an old horse come clopping down the other side of the path. He
saw them, eyed them, and stopped.
"Hullo," he said. Astra kept her mouth shut, she didn't have anything to say...her only thoughts remained on death and her own annihilation. Fred looked the man over and responded: "Hullo to you, old man. How far back is the closest village?" "Looks like you need more than a village to hold this here monster," he chortled with eyes of pity aimed at Astra. "I don't need your commentary, old man. This here 'monster' is far more dangerous than you could ever imagine. She's killed more men in her lifetime than you would think and only last night murdered a wee lass. Now, how far till the village?" Astra was stunned by Fred's description of her, she was especially perturbed by the truth of it. She had killed many men in her lifetime, in the service of her motherlands to be sure but yet the truth remained that men were dead at her hands. And now she carried the curse of the ergot; she must die, she knew this. And in all this anxious thought she failed to hear what the old man told Fred, but soon he was gone and the two were once again walking down the road.
