Fred was relieved that the hamlet had been where the man had
said it would be, and that they had reached it an hour or so before
moon-rise. He knew that Astra would probably change again tonight,
and though he had prevailed over her last night he could not be absolutely
sure that he would do so again. His own ropes would not necessarily be
sufficient to restrain her, but with any luck there would be some building
in the hamlet where she could be held securely.
For her part, Astra had not attempted to carry out her plan of forcing Fred to kill her. Her feeling of hopelessness and self-loathing had grown yet stronger whilst Fred had been talking to the traveler, sapping her will to take matters into her own hands. Their arrival in the hamlet naturally caused something of a stir. Visitors of any sort were rare, ones as strange as these much more so. Most of the place's hundred or so inhabitants gathered around them. One of them, a mild-looking and plump middle-aged man wearing a simple habit, whom Fred guessed was the hamlet's priest, looked at Fred and Astra with what Fred felt was an uncomfortably shrewd gaze. "Lycanthrope?" he asked Fred, pointing at Astra. "Yes," Fred said. "Just last night she killed a girl. I'm bringing her to justice." "May I try to cure her of her affliction? I've had some success in the past." That startled Fred, for he had never heard of a lycanthrope being cured. Astra had hoped that Belboz might be able to do so, but he was a mage of great power, not some lowly cleric. Not only were the priest's words unexpected, but they were most unwelcome.
