Astra trudged along in front of Fred, her hands securely tied behind her
back. She wore
only a few scraps of torn, burnt and bloodstained clothing, which
testified to the
truth of what Fred had told her. She had no memory of what had happened
after the moon
had risen, but even without the evidence of her clothes she would not have
doubted
Fred's account of events.
Astra was deep in despair. It was bad enough that Fred, whom she had thought of as a loyal friend, had betrayed her. Far worse was that she had killed an innocent girl. She accepted that she deserved to die, but she would have preferred a quick, clean death, and she knew that at the hands of the whitecloaks it would be anything but that. Their fearsome reputation had spread even to Aqualaria. She had begged Fred to run her through with his sword and so end her miserable life, but he had just laughed at her. Reflecting on that, Astra decided that she would make a run for it. She was under no illusion that she had any chance of escaping - Fred kept only two paces behind her, his hand on the hilt of his sword. However, by making the attempt she would force his hand. He would have to kill her if he did not want her to get away, and that would be the end of all her troubles.
