Fred and the others studied the strikingly purple fruit carefully. They
were some sort of large berry (the fruit, not Fred and the others), and
were heavy and ripe. It looked delicious.
"It's brightly colored," commented Alexis. "That sometimes means it's poisonous." "It can also mean it's quite tasty," said Robert. "Lots of good fruits are brightly colored." Fred tried to think logically. "Well, let's look at it this way. It may be safe, or it may not be. If we eat it, it might be bad for us. If we don't eat it, we'll survive for a little while longer. The logical point at which to eat it is when we will die if we don't eat." He stared longingly at the berries. "Makes sense," agreed Astra. Nobody moved. "Let's look at it this way," said Fred again. "Does this way mean we get to eat it?" asked Robert. "I think so. If we don't eat it, and we keep going, we might not find anymore of it and starve to death. If we eat it, if it's poisonous it'll kill us, but we would have died anyway." "I don't think that makes as much sense as the first one," said Astra. "I don't care, it sounds good to me," said Robert, and grabbed a berry.
