Fred notes with horror as the gnome's crossbow bolt buries itself straight
in your brain. You fall, already dead. Fred mourns your death but he could do little with having to take care of the mysteriously injured Velus. He snap-kicks the murderous gnome in the face. The creature falls back, it's crossbow falling. Fred stamps on the edge and the entire thing flips into the air. He catches it and fires the last two bolts still in the machinery. One plunges through the ugly green neck of a female gnome and the other pin's a male gnome's nuts to the wall. Fred runs for it, dragging Velus behind him. An hour passes. It seems that Fred's killing of one gnome and the wounding of two others was sufficent for pursuit to be called off. Maybe he had killed a leader. Velus lay sprawled on his makeshift strecher. He moaned as the heat of the small, ragged fire Fred had made washed over him. Dried drool flickers in the light.
