Agent Thoms frowned. "I don't think you are in any position to start making conditions," she said. "At the moment I'm asking you both to come with me to assist with my investigation into a very serious matter. If I were to arrest you, then you'd have a right to a lawyer. And if you carry on being obstructive, then I may have no alternative but to arrest you both."

Stacy wasn't quite sure how much of what Thoms had said was genuinely how she saw things and how much was just bluster. Nor was she too sure of exactly what her legal rights were.

  1. But she was feeling stubborn and stood her ground.
  2. She sighed. "You win," she said.
  3. Inexplicably, Dr. Smith suddenly bolted past Thoms and out of the room
