Hannah was horrified to find herself in a small pen with about a dozen other pigs, most of them adult males with far too much interest in her. She'd barely had any time to reconcile her life as Fred with her more recent life as Hannah - even before becoming a pig! It was the strangest thing, to have it be so not strange. She was already completely used to her piggish instincts, appetites, and moods. The big difference was when it dawned on her what some of those more recent changes meant. She squealed desperately to try to get the attention of the farmer, a hunchbacked man with leathery skin and silver hair, but she was drowned out by her fellows, packed in with her. This did make her very uncomfortable, as she was used to it being just her and Muriel - and Belboz. But at the same time, she was subject to instincts that very much invited the presence of other pigs, shall we say. This is how, after just a few weeks, Hannah became pregnant. It was around this time that she decided she had to escape; the farmer never paid much special attention to any one pig, so she couldn't count on him to help her.
