Cinnamon knew this was a rotten deal, but she also was absolutely certain that, if things went on unchanged, sooner or later her negligence was going to kill her daughter. It seemed this was the only thing left she could do, so she nodded miserably. The hag held out her arms for the child, and Cinnamon hugged her close for a long time, one last time, before reluctantly handing her over, weeping quietly. The hag accepted her and at once began to cackle as she worked her magic. The lovely maiden began to transform, stumbling back as her body descended into terrible pain as it reshaped itself. She fell over quite quickly as her basic anatomy completely shifted, becoming significantly more horizontal as her organs quivered and crawled across her insides to their new posts. She continually chirped and cheeped in distress and pain as the process went on, her skin sprouting white feathers all over, her brain squishing itself into a tiny area. Her legs grew short and spindly, her toes sprouting claws, while her arms devolved into small wings. At the end of it, a hen of about the age of three lay dazed on her floor, and the hag tapped her finger briefly against Nina's beak, which melted away at once, to be replaced by her original cute button nose and mouth. Nina, who had grown used to her beak, reached up in confusion, feeling her own face. Meanwhile, the chicken that had been Cinnamon flapped her wings and thrashed her legs until she managed to right herself. The hag had, cruelly, left her all of her human intelligence, insofar as she really had any left. At once she seized the hen by one leg and tossed her into a small cage in her cottage, closing and latching the door immediately. Naturally, as was a witch's M.O., one day, Nina would eat this chicken for dinner. But she was a little too young to get the full experience of such a meal, and the chicken should have a good few more years of life in her. No need to rush... So now, everything was in its proper place. Far away, Borovius scrambled to track the hag they'd recently fought and find where she'd taken his family, while Cinnamon - or Pot Pie, as the hag took to calling her - was never let out of her cage, and was quick to go quite mad. She laid multiple eggs a day, which the hag collected and ate. And meanwhile, she was raising Nina before Pot Pie's eyes...
