The voice of a chicken

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 118899

A "buh-GOK" immediately escaped her, and she brought her hand to her mouth, horrified, but in trying to cover it, she jabbed her palm into something pointy, and brought it away, shaking it in mild pain. She tentatively brought her fingers back up to investigate, and found her nose and mouth entirely gone, replaced by a petite beak, and a fleshy wattle hanging underneath it. She was horrified as she repeatedly pulled on the latter, but she could not express her horror, finding her beak rigid. She looked down, and noticed a tiny beak also replacing her little Nina's nose and mouth, though she lacked a wattle of her own.

The hag grinned, and said, "Your muteness is cured, my dear. No need to thank me. Feel free to explore the swamp; I do not obligate you to remain here in this cottage, but you'll find it quite impossible to leave my territory, per our arrangement."

Cinnamon left at once, chirping and boking almost uncontrollably, with no other way to express her sadness. She was dazed over what had happened, and apprehensive over what may still be coming, but glad, at least, that she still had Nina, and, though they had undergone something truly strange and life-altering, they could still be together as mother and daughter. But she ached at the thought that she'd left her husband and friends behind, and who knew what strange and wicked things lay in this swamp?

Her first job, which was by no means easy nor quick, was to find a new way to feed herself and her daughter. She tried grass, and found it agreeable enough, feeding some to Nina, who accepted it, but was horrified anew that she also had the urge to peck insects and worms off the ground. After some hours had passed, she tentatively tried it, and found it not too bad.

Once she'd had her fill and Nina seemed content, she settled down and at last allowed herself to weep uncontrollably over her predicament - her lost beauty, her changed form, her separation from her loved ones. Now Nina was all she had... Perhaps she could hope that, one day, Borovius would somehow find them...

Time began to pass. It wasn't long before Nina took her first steps. Cinnamon was constantly at her wit's end, trying to keep track of her - she was still tremendously scatterbrained and easily distracted, and she was the only one watching her daughter in a dangerous swamp. After a few months, in desperation, she brought Nina to the hag's cottage, hoping for some help. The hag understood her intent, and said,

  1. "If you'd like to become yet more galline physically, I could fix your mind."
  2. "I could let you keep the child here - much safer than out in the swamp. Just as long as you're willing to spend each night outside, alone."
  3. "I could raise the child myself, and transform the rest of your body to match your mind. I'll even fix her mouth, as a free gift."
