All at once, everything changed for Gerkka as To'og urged her along in the dead of night. Everything around her had felt... a bit unreal. There was a chance, and, she thought, a pretty good one, considering her good behavior, that she would be returned to human form sometime in the future. But... even if she did, what was waiting for her in such a life? She had no memories of her life before being Gerkka, but Gerkka had a mate and a child on the way, and an assurance of who she was. She was an ogress. She was strong, and surefooted, and she would be a mother very soon. So, though it struck her at once that, if she left with To'og now, she was choosing this life forever, she was more than happy to do so.

To'og led her along, matching her slower pace as they moved. Neither of them thought to cover their tracks, but ogres were tireless and determined, and by the time anyone realized they were gone later that next day, they had covered many miles and vanished quite completely into the wilderness.

To'og began to look for a place for them to live, hoping to find a colony of other ogres. He missed living among his own kind, and knew they would be able to provide for his mate and child.

  1. And, because he knew what to look for, after little less than a month, To'og and Gerkka found a colony of two dozen other ogres.
  2. But after about a month of searching, Gerkka was simply too far along to continue the search, so they settled down alone - at least until the baby was old enough to travel.
