In her mind only, of course, Hannah indulged in a not-so-ladylike curse as she felt her entire face grow hot yet again. Belboz grinned—But he misunderstood!—and was quick to say, "I shall take that as a yes. You enjoyed his company?" "I-I enjoyed all of their company," Hannah managed. Belboz pursed his lips, nodding. "I see. You have misgivings." "I didn't say that," Hannah insisted, growing panicked. She was messing up! What if Belboz mistook this for ingratitude? "You didn't have to, my dear. Look, Ivo is a good choice. You could do far worse. I'd like you to see how all this plays out. All right? You won't have to make any decisions for a few years anyhow. Deal?" "Deal," Hannah choked out in relief. Jordana was still her friend, and Hannah saw her family often. And most members of the family continued to vex and distress her in very unique ways, which in turn distressed her yet more as she failed to reconcile these feelings with the kindness they showed and the propriety she must embody at every moment. Ivo's interest in her became official shortly after her thirteenth birthday, and she allowed it to happen, per her dear uncle's request—as she did with so many other things. Her mother was beside herself at the prospect, and it was all thanks to Belboz for financing her schooling. Things were getting very serious a few years after that. She was about to graduate, and it was almost a guarantee that Ivo would ask for her hand once she did. Over their winter holiday break, Hannah came home—now that Ivo was courting her, it would be tremendously improper for him to stay with his family, after all—and Belboz visited as well during this time. He came to her small room that first night to find her fast asleep. He stood in her doorway, watching her thoughtfully, and at length said, "I've but one final enchantment. This looks like the long game I've been playing, but things have, in large part, just worked out on their own. One final enchantment. One last spell. And, my sweet, this torment shall be over. All there is left to do is
