Fred decided that he was unlikely ever to get a better chance than this. Climbing out of the sluice once he had entered the room, so as to avoid stepping on the metal bar, would cost him several seconds, which might make the difference between success and failure. The bar was too wide for him to be confident of leaping over it, with the resistance of the water slowing him down and his armour encumbering him. So it was fortunate that he was wearing the flamebane mail.

Making up his mind, he charged into the room as fast as he could, his sword in his hand. He was only in contact with the metal bar for a second or so, and didn't even notice any warmth from it. A moment later, there was a big splash as he leapt into the pool.

The masseuse reacted quicker than her master. In an unexpected development, she flung herself between the beast and Fred. What was he to do now? As a chivalrous knight, he was reluctant to strike her down to get at the dragon.

  1. He attempted to maneouvre so as to come at the dragon from the side.
  2. He decided that, as a loyal servant of the dragon she could expect no mercy, and stabbed her through the heart.
  3. He used his free hand to thrust her aside.
  4. His moment of indecision gave the dragon time to react.
  5. He forced her to the ground.
