Smells, Sounds, or Sights?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 117908

Fred cautiously advanced into the dark. He felt the gentle downhill grade of the sluice, and at first worried about slipping, but the bed of the sluice was rough enough that he gained confidence in his footing. As he moved on, his pupils widened, but the light from his back faded until all he could see was spots and streaks. He was not superstitious - these were false images that one would see if there were very little light. He had experienced this before, but not while moving through an underground sluice. Bad luck losing the torch! He listened. The water trickled. He breathed. His heart beat. Advance!

After a short time, Fred's view changed subtly as he could now make out forms ahead- maybe light leaking from somewhere? And then, yes, Fred knew that he had reached a mouth of the sluice.

  1. The scent was diffuse here, but heavenly. Cinnamon! The spice of kings and the rich. Lemon! An exotic fruit. He had hard work ahead, but this could well be the massage room that Maggie described.
  2. It was not what he expected. He could hear the sounds of metal tinging and softly banging. It was not violent. His first thought was that he might be near a kitchen.
  3. The light seemed to be brighter than he would expect. Did this sluice lead outside? He thought that he heard some intermittent splashing noises - not like a waterfall or rapids, but maybe created by an animal? Or man?
