Fred cautiously advanced into the dark. He felt the gentle downhill grade of the sluice, and at first worried about slipping, but the bed of the sluice was rough enough that he gained confidence in his footing. As he moved on, his pupils widened, but the light from his back faded until all he could see was spots and streaks. He was not superstitious - these were false images that one would see if there were very little light. He had experienced this before, but not while moving through an underground sluice. Bad luck losing the torch! He listened. The water trickled. He breathed. His heart beat. Advance! After a short time, Fred's view changed subtly as he could now make out forms ahead- maybe light leaking from somewhere? And then, yes, Fred knew that he had reached a mouth of the sluice.
