Fred was chagrined by how they were handling her, and felt extraordinarily vulnerable, but she had to stay here, at their mercy. Besides, their careful inspection could very well be a good sign, could it not? Other toads had been present, but none were receiving this special attention - in fact none had come as close to the nymphs as she had, although none of them seemed to be avoiding them as if they were potential predators. They very likely were used to their presence in this pond and had no reason to fear ill intent.

  1. Eventually, and quite suddenly, one of the nymphs kissed Fred full on the mouth, and she felt herself beginning to change!

  3. The nymphs began to lightly run their fingers all along Fred's bumpy body, singing quietly. For some reason she was tremendously soothed by their caresses and sweet song, and eventually was lulled to sleep.
