Clara

Astra clutched the key with her fist and prepared to defend against her assailant. The woman stopped.

"I hope that you are as smart as you are stubborn. Do you want to get out of here?"

"Yes, of course."

"So do I. Clara Torrente, Corps of Engineers, at your service. I need you to do exactly what I say, without any backtalk. Got that?"

Astra was bewildered, but she had no choice but to say, "Yes."

"Free yourself."

Astra took the keys and freed herself from her fetters. The other woman was still down. Clara tore off a large chunk of bread and stuffed it into the other woman's mouth to keep her silent in case she woke up.

"Poor Nora. We can't take her with us. She would not be reliable. Got to get her out of the way."

Astra's situation was fraught with danger, but more promising than she had imagined a few minutes ago. Why was Clara helping her if she were a Dragazon? If she was against the Dragon, why had she not escaped earlier? And how did she manage to acquire enough trust to get a job where she would carry a knife? What were they going to do with Nora? With Fred? And what did Clara have in mind as far as escape?

1. "So what do you want me to do now?" asked Astra.
