Together they ate a meal of berries, the first fairy food Frita had had. It was the most delicious thing she'd ever tasted in her whole life. So juicy and succulent, so rich and flavorful. She tried not to eat too ravenously, keeping in mind that Arion was right there, but it was so difficult to hold back. Why she could see herself growing fat off of these. As they finished up, Arion was saying, "I cannot wait until tonight, Frita." "Why's that?" she asked absently, licking a finger. "What's tonight?" Arion stared at her strangely, even looking a little hurt, and she realized she must have said something wrong. "Where do you come from, my morning glow?" Morning glow? Was that a term of endearment? "Um," she said. "Far away." "I thought this custom extended to all fairy colonies." He shook his head. "Last night was the spritestar acceptance, which bonds us eternally. Traditionally, the following night is when we perform the ceremonial dance and touch our wands together, signifying the unbreakable promise to spend all our lives honoring that bond. It is the second and final stage of the mating process." Eternal bond? she thought in alarm. Apparently there were no direct parallels with the human practice of engagement and then marriage. They were already eternally bound? What did that mean exactly? What on earth had she gotten herself into? And "unbreakable promise"... oh how that did not sit well with her. And yet it did. It felt so good and so right. It felt like it was what she was meant to do.
