Dull-eyed, Angela fastened the small gold studs into her ears. And all at once, she was waking up next to Joe, sweat beading on her forehead. The clock read 3:48 AM. All she could think about was her best friend. Melanie James, the woman she'd made fast friends with in college, who'd been her maid of honor, who'd stood by her for years. What on earth had she been thinking? She couldn't leave her behind. The golden studs were missing from her ears, having melted straight into her skin. She still remembered being Fred. But it hardly mattered. She had chosen the piece of jewelry attached to her love for her friend, and it was this connection that would keep her here, living Angela's life, forever. That morning she called Mel to set up a lunch, and the following day they met up at their favorite cafe.
