Why in fact, slowly but surely, the dryads have been working on initiating Sereia into their ranks. The girl had been fully transformed into a sapling after a year or so of slumber, and it will take many more years until the tree is mature, but once it is, she will step forth from it—Sereia the wood nymph, now with a tree of her own. Charlie, of course, knows none of this. He paces around in desperation and slowly increasing fear, and hidden in their tree forms, the dryads all around watch him. They whisper to each other, certain that he's the father the child spoke of, trying to decide what to do with him. He merely hears their voices as the wind rustling the leaves. Eventually, after much debate, they decide...
