Sereia's decision

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 115218

Melusinth hangs her fruit low and uses her voice to awaken both hunger and thirst in the man. Sure enough, his eyes fall on the delicious-looking fruit, practically dripping with juice, and he reaches forward and takes it, biting into it hungrily.

As with Susie, it immediately awakens an awe in him, and he finishes it slowly and immediately falls to a sitting position among the roots, staring around at the trees. Murmuring voices around him seem to lull him to sleep. His last conscious thought is the hope that perhaps Susie will find him as he sleeps.

Charlie's profound slumber goes on for fifteen years as the tree a few yards in front of him grows tall and strong. The dryads begrudgingly keep him safe and sheltered, but they do not waste precious forest magic keeping him young. And so, the twenty-five-year-old Charlie grows into a forty-year-old man among the roots of Melusinth's trees, covered in moss and earth and often forgotten by the dryads as they go on with their day-to-day lives.

Until finally, the day comes. All the nymphs in the forest can feel it, and they crowd around Sereia's tree, waiting for her appearance. And with the first light of the morning, the tree opens up, and she steps out gracefully.

She is unrecognizable as the clumsy human child they found her as. She now appears as a very tall woman, almost seven feet, with a cascade of chestnut brown hair tumbling in graceful waves to her waist. Her eyes, which before were blue, are now dark pink like the wildflowers that grow from her scalp and form a crown on her head. Her skin is pale green, except for her long fingers and toes, which are the dark brown of the soil. Small, leafy vines twine around her arms and legs, and moss grows in patches on her body, covering what it should, and little more.

She gazes around at her sisters, a peaceful smile on her face. They crowd around her, touching her hair, complimenting her eyes, officially welcoming her to the forest.

In fact, it is about a year before they even remember that the human still remains in Melusinth's roots. Sereia has lived happily among them and not once mentioned her human beginnings, and the others are now loath to bring it up in case she does not recall at all. But the forest's magic is hers to command now as well, and if she wishes it, she can cause herself to forget. So they tell her that her human father has been resting beneath Melusinth's roots for sixteen years. At first, Sereia has no idea what they're talking about. But as they continue to explain, how he left her and she once wished to find out why, she finds something tickles at the back of her mind.

  1. She decides to awaken him, and confront him with all her questions.
  2. She decides to awaken him, and merely observe him for a while. She will protect him from afar, but not confront him. Not yet.
  3. She can find in herself no desire to speak to him. She decides to awaken him and command him, as Sereia the wood nymph, to leave the forest and never return.
  4. She can find in herself no desire to speak to him. She decides to leave him sleeping beneath the ground and forget him.
  5. She decides that although she does not wish to go through the pain of speaking to him, she does want him nearby. She resolves to enchant him with the forest's magic so that he may live here blissfully forever, but never be truly aware again.
