Going Home with Josh

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 115141

"Babe," said the young man from before, approaching her upon seeing she was awake, "are you okay? What happened last night? Why'd you run off? And why'd you put on that sweater? You could've died, I've been so worried."

She wasn't sure how to respond, frankly. But he seemed a right mess and it was her fault. She didn't want to have done that to him. "I'm sorry... babe," she said carefully. "I... my head just suddenly hurt so bad, and I... I fell out the window and... I don't know, I was just suddenly really freaked out and I had to run. I guess I put on the first clothes I grabbed." It's not even a real excuse, but she can't come up with a single way to make her actions make sense.

"Hormonal thing?" he guessed. "I dunno, babe, it's just... it's really weird. Has anything like that happened before?"

She shook her head automatically.

"That's good I guess..." He rubbed his head. "They're gonna release you, they say you'll be fine... I just... are you sure there's nothing else you want to tell me?"

Fred shook her head. "There's nothing. It was just strange. I'm so sorry I worried you like that. I never wanna do that again."

The man smiled. "I hope you don't." He sighed. "All right, Lizzie, time to get dressed, and we can go home."

Home. Where was home? Where was Fred? What was going on?

Eh. She didn't feel like there needed to be any urgency. This guy seemed nice. And she didn't want to run off and worry him again.

Josh, she suddenly remembered. His name was Josh.

She frowned lightly. Wait, how did she know that?

Ah well, what did it matter? It was good that she knew now, in any case.

She got dressed (the article of clothing he gave her was a very small dress by all standards Fred had ever known, covered with a floral pattern, and she smiled on seeing it), they left the building, and she climbed into Josh's metal machine—car—and as she sat there, she suddenly was gripped with a vague fear at how absolutely comfortable all this was. Why wasn't she more worried? Panicked, even? She was in a strange body in a strange world and she had a quest to get back to—

She was mildly surprised when Josh suddenly leaned over and kissed her on the mouth. She didn't kiss back, but she didn't fight it. "You okay, babe?" he asked after he pulled away.

Fred nodded, smiling. "Of course."

They pulled up to the house they shared—a practice which, considering they weren't married or even betrothed, should have appalled Fred, but somehow felt very normal. She sifted through the growing collection of memories in her mind, and found that Josh earned his living as

  1. a historian with a focus on the Middle Ages, and a part-time fencing instructor.
  2. an illusionist.
  3. a florist.
