A Cow that Talks

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 113868

It was an ordinary day, and she hadn't even thought about her old life since sometime last week. The wizard was just petting her, running his hands up and down her side, while she chewed absently on her cud. And suddenly he stepped back, regarding her. She ignored him, until he said, "Speak."

The simple command snapped her back into the memory of when she had been able to do that, and she looked at him in mild alarm and confusion.

"You heard me," said Vycynth. "Open your mouth and speak. Start by telling me what your name was."

Freda compliantly opened her mouth, testing the waters. To her utter shock, out came a dull-sounding female voice: "Fred."

She blinked, unable to process what was happening. Vycynth blinked as well. "Hm. Okay, bit predictable. I had expected it would be something further removed. Freda, you can now speak. Don't abuse the ability or I will remove it again, straightaway. Tell me, for I am very curious: how did this happen to you?"

Freda had stopped chewing. It would be difficult to use this speech ability while still working on her cud. And she was trying to remember the answer to the question, her brain working much harder than it had in the last month at least. "Clothes... box," she tried.

Vycynth cocked his head. "Clothes box? A... wardrobe, perhaps? A magic wardrobe?"

Freda was back to chewing, feeling rather exhausted.

Presently Vycynth left her alone, and she tried speaking a bit while he was gone. It felt so strange.

  1. She improved with practice, and though her mind remained muddy as ever, she eventually became able to construct full sentences.
  2. Her mental faculties limited her capacity for speech severely, and she continued speaking only in single words and sometimes short phrases.
