Fred's heart sank when Prasgoth said that he was unable to restore her voice. The wizard went on: "But once you and Loreena have fulfilled the prophecy then I shall ask Belboz to restore not only your voice but your rightful form - and Loreena's too. He's the only wizard I know who is powerful enough to do it. I'm afraid that there's no guarantee that he will agree, though; as I said, he's not a good man. And of course you will need to survive the encounter with the dragon before that can happen."

Fred supposed that what Prasgoth had said was some slight comfort. The wizard went on: "Have you had a chance to consider what your new name should be, as I asked? I shall fetch a sheet of parchment and a quill so you can write it down for me. You do know how to write, I hope?"

Fred nodded, slightly offended that Prasgoth would think that a knight of the realm might be illiterate. The wizard brought the quill, parchment and a pot of ink, and Fred wrote:

  1. "Frieda". It was as close a female name to "Fred" as she could think of.
  2. "Lilith." Perhaps Belboz had cast a spell on her to force her to adopt the name that he had chosen for her, she thought.
  3. "Fred." She was adamant that she would not adopt another name.
  4. But she found herself unable to write after all. It seemed that Belboz had not wanted her to be able to communicate in any way.
