As Stacy and Astra put on their spacesuits and helmets, and then helped each other with the seals that ensured that the connection of the helmet to the suit was airtight, Stacy realised that they must be in an airlock. It was lucky that one had been so close at hand. Beyond the door with the warning sign must be outer space. There was probably a vacuum past the door they had entered by as well by now; the space station had clearly suffered a major hull breach to cause a hurricane like that.
Astra pressed a button on her suit that had an icon for a microphone on it and then reached over and pressed the corresponding button on Stacy's suit. "Can you hear me?" she said. "Yes." "Can you breathe OK?" "Yes, thanks." "Good. Now that we won't suffocate, we must try to make our way to the gateway so we can get back home. Hopefully it won't have been damaged. If it has been, and the station is uninhabitable, then we'll have to take one of the station's lifeboats and try to land on the planet below, even though that would probably maroon us in this reality. I have no idea how to pilot a lifeboat, though, so hopefully it will all be automated." Astra cautiously opened by a foot or so the door leading back into the station. It was immediately clear that a pitched battle was in progress outside, with projectiles being fired down the corridor in both directions. She hurriedly closed the door again, and turned a rotary handle to ensure that it was secure. "We'd have no chance out there," she told Stacy. "So there's no alternative to a space walk. We'll have to re-enter the ship by way of another airlock, hopefully somewhere where it will be a bit more peaceful."
