It occurred to Stacy that Don Marks might have been joking about her firing everyone. It was just the sort of quip that someone whose company had been taken over might make. Would it be worse to fire everyone when Marks hadn't been expecting it or not to fire them when he had been expecting her to do so?
What a minute! she thought. Haven't I just bought this company? That means that I don't work for Marks; he works for me. So why am I worrying? Besides, his remark is just the sort of joking remark that someone whose company has been taken over would be likely to make. She decided that, thought it was a bit late now, she really ought to read the papers that she had just signed. Her aide, Steven Boswell, must have her own copy, but he had already left. And I've no idea how to get in touch with him. How embarrassing! That left the copy of the papers in Johnson's briefcase.
