Now, Waverly had no idea how long it had been since she had been a man. Those days were behind her. In fact, twelve years had gone by. And the absence of Fred had been very felt for all this time. The net in which Waverly became caught was, by some bizarre stroke of fate, the net of a man called Sir Ricardo O'Farrell, of whom Fred had been a dear friend. When Waverly saw his face, she felt some distant stir of recognition far in the back of her mind where shadows of her human memories resided, but could not quite place him. She immediately shrugged it off. "Hello," she said, flicking her tail and giving the man a soft smile. He stared into her eyes and then down at said tail, wonder and awe large upon his face. "My name is Waverly. You have captured me, and I shall give you three wishes in return for my release." After some open-mouthed staring, the knight finally managed, "I-I am Sir Ricardo O'Farrell. Rick." The name and the Irish lilt to his voice further strengthened the feeling of familiarity within Waverly, but she continued to ignore it. "I... I just need some time to process this. Um... I've heard that wishing the dragon dead is impossible. Just checking...?" "You heard right. The dragon's magic is far too strong for a mermaid's magic to overpower. Plus, it would end the quest, and the never-ending quest can never end." "What?" "Nothing. So, what'll it be?" Rick sighed. "Well, I can't help but think of my friend, Sir Fred... He vanished twelve years ago. I don't know what happened to him, and I just want him back safe." Waverly's delusion ran so deep that her brain refused to make any connection, though this name rang some particularly strong bells. "What, then, is your wish?" Rick thought a moment more, and said,
