Waverly closed her eyes in concentration for a moment, magically summoning the information, and began to speak. "He was fishing one day, not too long after the beginning of his quest, when he caught a mermaid, called Melody. Melody granted him wishes for her freedom but through a combination of momentary foolish distraction on his part and severe uncooperativeness on hers, he himself became a mermaid. Due to Melody's magic, this mermaid quickly fell in love with the sea and merfolk culture and lost the will to return to land. She began calling herself Waverly and formed a family of her own. Today, she is very, very happy." She paused, and opened her eyes, but was unable to focus them for a moment. Finally the truth was staring her in the face, and her brain stopped working. It wasn't the only thing staring her in the face. Rick was watching her with an expression of disbelief upon his features. "Fred?" he breathed, face unchanging. Waverly nodded, unable to deny it. "It is I." "If this is some sort of sick joke, it's not funny." "I am a mermaid, and I am bound by the limitations and regulations of my wish-granting abilities. I have spoken the truth." Dread was growing inside her at what he would do with this information. "Including the part about being happy. I am quite content and in fact think I should be miserable if anything about my life were changed." Finally, Rick said,
