Fred was immediately intensely nervous. What could the girl have to say to her? They didn't really know each other. Was she about to be caught?

But all she could do was meekly follow this man back inside, through the throng of screaming children, and to the birthday girl herself. She was a beautiful child with long dark hair and a lacy white dress. Fred silently handed her the gift she'd been carrying, waiting in apprehension.

Marcelina asked, "What's your name?"

"Hannah," said Fred in a small voice.

The girl nodded.

  1. "My brother - he's only ten months older than me - really likes you. Can you go talk to him?"
  2. "We're gonna play a game. I want you on my team."
  3. She leaned forward and whispered, "I know it isn't really. Meet me upstairs in five minutes; we need to talk."
