Fred had been struggling to come to terms with her emotional reaction ever since Henry had died. On the one hand, she was never really in love with him. She never could be. On the other, she had certainly grown fond of him, and knew him to be a good man, and, most of all, the family had to stop growing with his passing. Hannah was now forty-two years old, with visible lines in her face, and she was the single mother of thirty children, one of whom had been born after Henry's death. They had moved into a much larger house many years ago and the oldest sons who were still home were taking care of their mother, going out to farm every day. Hannah missed the children who had gone off and started families of their own dearly, and her grandmotherly feelings were just as strong as her motherly ones. She was in the market with four of her daughters when she noticed a man watching her, and it made her very uncomfortable. A few minutes after they got home, there was a knock at the door. Naturally, a child answered it, but Hannah arrived on the scene within moments. She didn't recognize the man. He had very dark hair, a sharp moustache, and a short beard, and wore a long purple robe. Immediately she knew he must be a wizard. A certain wizard had brought a lot of joy into her life, and yet she did know that it had been against her will. She waited apprehensively for him to speak. "Good day, madam," he said, eyebrow raised. "My name is Elgorim. I wondered: how many children do you have?" "Thirty," said Hannah, and she blinked. Her tongue felt loose. Elgorim's eyes widened, but he nodded thoughtfully. "All yours?" "Yes," said Hannah readily. Elgorim nodded again, and said,
