Extra Measures

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 111108

Staring at the vial, Charlie feels a stab of guilt, and realizing how scared he is of the thought of what that guilt could drive him to do, he lets the vial slip through his fingers and shatter on the floor.

He spends his free time over the several months that follow preparing two more potions: one for Susan, to ensure beyond any doubt that she never wants for anything that would cause her to leave or even spend less time with Charlie; and one for himself, to make him forget that Susan was ever anything other than his kind caretaker, or that he was ever alone.

It takes nearly a year to complete the potions, and once he does, he gets up early to bake Susan's into a pastry and surprise her with a nice breakfast. He plans to take the other potion himself once he is sure this one has worked.

As might be expected, Susan is delighted to see what her sweet little Charlie has made for her, and showers him with hugs and kisses. She eats the pastry enthusiastically but daintily, while Charlie watches closely.

  1. Almost immediately, it is clear that something is wrong.
  2. Susan has no immediate reaction, which is as it should be.
