And so it is that Charlie finally secures what he wanted: a sweet companion who will love and take care of him. Fred is gone, effectively dormant in that little vial, and Charlie is never going to inform Susan of what she once was. She's so happy this way anyway.

Now Susan appears as a particularly physically mature girl of about eighteen, and she will age very well, but age she does. She never stops doting on Charlie, and in the years that follow her transformation, she becomes an expert at cooking, cleaning, knitting, dancing, and gardening. Charlie is overwhelmingly happy to have her around. All the while she never suspects a thing, and Charlie, not caring to see her as anything else, begins to forget what she used to be. One morning he realizes vaguely that he has no idea where he hid away that vial, but waves the thought away; he has no need to know.

Now one day, after five years of blissful peace...

  1. Charlie uncovers the vial of Fred's memories, and decides to take a few extra steps to make absolutely sure that he does not lose Susan.
  2. Susan comes home with a handsome man on her arm. Charlie is instantly afraid that this man will take his lovely caretaker away from him, but later, when Susan is not in the room, the man reveals that he knows something has been done to her.
  3. one Sir Ricardo O'Farrell comes knocking on their door, saying he is looking for a Lord Fred and that his magical token has led him to this location.
