Charlie knows that if the potion has indeed worked, her behavior won't have changed enough to tell outright, so he'll have to test it. His plan is to encourage a local man called Uwe, who he knows fancies Susan, to ask her to an upcoming village dance. If she says yes, Charlie will know the potion has failed. But if she declines, hopefully she will say it is because she can't get involved with anyone, as she can't leave Charlie. Then he will know it has been successful.

  1. Susan accepts Uwe's invitation, much to Charlie's disappointment.
  2. Susan rejects Uwe's invitation, citing her deep loyalty to Charlie as her reason. Charlie is ecstatic, and goes on to drink his own potion.
  3. Susan rejects Uwe's invitation, but not for the reasons Charlie would have expected.
  4. Before Charlie can even have that conversation with Uwe, it becomes clear that something went wrong with the potion.
