The Never Ending Quest - Episode 10992

Varonir Lightbringer had to admit, this patrol had been a lot more interesting than he had thought it was going to be, to say the least. Young and impetuous, he didn't like being relegated to border patrols when the war with the Enemy was going on all too near him. He had wanted to fight in the war, to be a hero. He didn't want to be forced into some obscure patrol assignment.

He had voiced his complaints often to his father, a general in the High Elven army. His father had told him that he should be content with this assignment. It is a mistake to seek after honor and glory, he had said. Courage, he had said, was not looking for trouble but making the best of the situation one had, and doing the right thing above and beyond the call of duty. If you seek after egotistical self-glorification or excitement, you are just as bad as the Dark Elves. And this assignment was important anyway, as this was one of the few joint High Elf/Wood Elf companies, and he would be the leader of his patrol. He would, in a small way, help hold together the uneasy alliance between the High Elven and Wood Elven tribes. And so on and so forth.

He had not enjoyed this assignment. For one thing, this assignment was too easy for him. He had wanted one that challenged his fighting skills, but he rarely ever got to do any actual fighting. For another thing, the High Elves and Wood Elves in his company tolerated each other, but not more. Neither group seemed to completely accept him. This was no surprise, after all, he was a "half-breed," the child of a High Elven general and a Wood Elven seer. He felt that he just didn't have the leadership or charisma to handle this assingment. He had complained about all this to his father, who had wryly asked how this mission could be both above and below his abilities. That had shut him up, for now. But he still resented it.

Until now, that is. The morning had started normally. He had gotten up, and prepared to wake the others in his patrol up, when he had heard a sound in the bushes. He had cautiously gone to investigate it. It was probably a wild beast, he had thought, but perhaps it was a Dark Elven marauder or even an Enemy spy. This could be quite exciting.

Well, it had turned out to be quite exciting, much more than he had expected. Facing him, instead of a Dark Elven marauder or an Enemy spy, was a legendary human! She was overwhelmingly tall and fantastically beautiful, well built in more ways than one. She was wearing body armor, and looked quite formidible. Perhaps she could be a useful ally in the war against the Enemy. Perhaps she was even a wizard! He had certainly not expected to see an actual human. He had never believed the legends. His attitude towards humans had been that they probably don't exist, although he'd very much like to meet one if they did. But now one was there, before him.

For quite a while, he had just stared at her, in awe of the prescence of a legendary human, not to mention overwhelmed by her beauty. Eventually, he gathered his wits together as best he could. "A real live human!" he said, still astonished. "I had always thought they were purely mythical creatures!" The human woman seemed quite astonished at that, for some reason. He contined, "If the legends about humans are true, perhaps you might be able to help us...."
