Fred was shocked, but of course since she had been rendered mute she could not protest. This was not at all proper knightly behaviour. Perhaps, in spite of his chain mail, the man was not a knight after all, but some sort of brigand. Why was he making her his prisoner? What did he intend to do with her?

Once he was satisfied that her bonds were secure, the man said: "You're a quiet one, aren't you? Much better than a screamer."

  1. He added: "A pretty little thing like you should fetch a good price as a slave."
  2. Then he lifted her over his shoulder, carried her to his horse which was not far away, and laid her over it just behind the saddle, with her head hanging down on one side and her legs on the other. Then he mounted and rode off.
