Nowhere in Hannah's manufactured and rudimentary memories could be found any instance of doing anything on her own. She was very afraid, but she was even more afraid of possibly being rejected by her darling Belboz. She couldn't let him see her like this. She couldn't disappoint him. Fortunately, having heard Belboz's frequent talk of his work made her rather privy to the location of the nearest magic user who might be able to help her. She managed all right--she was not too far under average intelligence, and passing strangers were more than willing to help such a beautiful girl. However, halfway into the journey she began hiding under the cover of a hood, for the disgusting blemishes had begun spreading across her face. By the time she reached the castle of the enchantress Mariela two weeks later, she was green, bumpy, and swollen from head to toe. The thick black hair sprouted in regular intervals all over her body and had reached the length of about two inches. It was extraordinarily uncomfortable and she had given up mirrors entirely.
