"First," Scott Chen continued, "the rules. The first rule is that I make
all of the rules.
"The second rule is that there shall be three teams of three each competing to win this game. Now, normally I’d put one Doctor, one Master, and one companion-type female together to make three equal teams, but I decided it would be much more fun to have the Doctors competing against the Masters competing against Stacy and the two Bettys. "The third rule is that I reveal the rules as I make them to all teams at the same time. "The fourth rule is that any time a rule contradicts a previous rule, the team that notices first will gain one point, and the new rule will be deleted. "The fifth rule is that I may create, modify and destroy rules as I see fit. Only these five rules can never be modified or destroyed. "The sixth rule is that the only object that teams may carry between Games is this electronic Refugee’s Guide to Addventurespace." He handed a small PDA-like object to the Third Doctor, the Delgado Master, and Stacy. "This Guide will tell you everything you need to know about Addventurespace. The updated rules can be accessed by pressing the 'Rules' button in the upper right. Oh, Rule-Scribe, nothing I said after giving them the Guides is actually part of the sixth rule." The Rule-Scribe struck Scott’s last speech from the Rule Book. "The seventh rule is that the only way to transport between Games is to collect a minimum amount of points. A further rule must specify ways of earning and losing points other than as specified in the fourth rule. "The eighth rule is that the first team to make it through each of Games 1, 2, and 3 will win, unless I decree some other way of winning in a further rule." Stacy pressed the Rules button at the top of her Guide. She figured it would be much easier to read the rules than to listen to that crazy Scott Chen or whatever sadist was putting her through all of this. Sure enough, all eight rules were there, just as the Rule-Scribe had written them. "Good? All right then, I think eight rules is quite enough for now. Hmm...oh yes, we need a starting point! Well, it would be fair for everyone to start at the same point, but I don’t like fair. Therefore, the Doctors will start in Game 1, the Masters in Game 2, and the Bettys and Stacy in Game 3. Remember, you have to make it through all three games to win, unless I decide otherwise!" The room then went blank, and Scott Chen was left alone with the Rule-Scribe. Only then did he realize he hadn’t specified how collecting points was supposed to help them get to the next game. Oh well, he figured. That would be the ninth rule. For the moment, though, he was going to have fun making his characters’ lives miserable.
