As the sun sets at the end of the day, Zenobia's hopes plummet to almost nothing. She doesn't know what would stop Glimdrang--she didn't doubt his loyalty, but now she begins to, though it could have also been some trap or barrier set up by Xanven.
She pays close attention to her own thought processes, and even after one week they don't seem to be muddying up or slowing down too much, though it takes some concentration. She will do anything to stop herself from becoming just what she appears to be, a dumb dog, completely trusting of that horrible man. Though she does find that her tail involuntarily wags whenever he approaches. She can't stop that, and she hates it.

After that first week, Xanven adds a new member to her pen--a small grey dog that doesn't act like he used to be human. But Xanven says, "What do you think of your would-be rescuer's new form, Maculla? He was easier to break than you'll be, certainly."
-
After one month, Zenobia/Maculla (she is by now truly struggling to preserve her human witch identity, as just being a stupid dog becomes so much easier) manages to find a flaw in Xanven's magical barrier, and escapes through it.
-
After three months, Zenobia is well gone, and Xanven finally takes Maculla on her first hunt to celebrate.

After eight months, Xanven sells Maculla to another sorcerer. (Maculla's story)

-
After one year, Xanven turns the now completely doglike Maculla back into Zenobia.
-
After five years, when Pruvyre is getting to be very old, Xanven is attacked by the nearby village, from which he has kidnapped one too many villagers. There are enough weak magic users there to overcome his barriers, and all the dogs are freed.
