The Underground Pond

The cart rolled until it landed in the pond, where it sank. The edge of the pond was shallow, and Astra jumped out of the cart onto the damp ground next to the pond.

She was underground, but she could see the pond, the grass, and a nearby farmhouse. It was the cold light that one saw when one travelled to the lands far north of her homeland, as if the sun was struggling to break free of the earth. But she was underground. Where was all the light coming from?
