And so, Hannah was placed under the care of Stuart the elderly woodcarver. He got to know her very quickly, since her personality was not at all complicated. It didn't take him long to realize that she was very sweet, but very, very empty-headed. He tried to teach her some basic chores, and even succeeded with a few. She would never be able to truly earn her keep—he wouldn't trust her for one second to carve wood safely—but he was a simple man with simple wishes, for peace and quiet rather than luxury. So he could spare the extra expenses. She wasn't even that expensive anyway. He cared for her like a granddaughter, and they quickly grew fond of one another.
