"All right, so you are now basically a human plant," Merek says as he walks with his companion, watching him sweat sap under the hot sun. Fred wipes sap off his forehead yet again, and brushes several ants off his arms. "This is awful. She's never going to come willingly." "Probably not," Merek agrees. "And turning her back into a mortal woman is beyond my power. We will have to consult an expert." "Any chance the expert will know how to fix me?" Fred asks. "A small one. Nymph magic is not a well understood thing, and I'm not sure if it's possible to reverse." Fred groans, and he sounds just like a tree groaning in a great gust of wind. The two begin their journey. Not long into it, Fred discards his shoes, as they are hurting him. It turns out his feet have grown considerably, turning brownish and rough. His hair, too, begins to fall out, to be replaced by long, wispy blades of grass. And not just the hair on his head—all of it. Thankfully, though, the physical changes stop there. After he gets past that, he just has to deal with every liquid his body produces becoming sap—sweat, tears, saliva—insects crawling all over him, and the moss that accumulates inexplicably quickly on him when he stops to rest for too long. When they reach Merek's expert, he gives them two pieces of bad news: One, nymph magic is indeed irreversible, except by the nymph who originally did it; and two, a nymph cannot be turned into a human being if she does not want to be. "Sorry, old chap," Merek says as they leave. "What do you propose we do now?"
