Earthbound

"There is nothing you can do here," the alien told her calmly, "and you would only be placing yourself in needless danger. Is this what your sibling would want?"

Stacy found she had no good reply for that.

"We will be sending a team down to invesitage and reclaim -- and, if necessary, repair -- the ship from which you were abducted," it went on. "We will send you down with them, and will keep in contact with news of the battle and any information we obtain about your brother. Is that acceptable?"

"I guess it'll have to be," said Stacy resignedly. Suddenly, a thought hit her, and she exclaimed "Paula! My god, in all the excitement I forgot all about Paula!" When the alien looked at her quizzically, she explained, "Paula originally boarded the ship with us, but for some reason the aliens... uh, your people, wouldn't let her stay on board. She's probably still down there... I'll have to find her and let her know what's going on! Um... Will the ship have landed back at the same spot it took off from? Because that's probably where she still is."

1. "Yes," the alien said, "its automatic programming would have returned it to the same place."
2. "No," the alien replied, "but it is probably not too distant. Perhaps we could send some people out to look for your friend."
