"Connar," Diana says dreamily while packing bags, "I can't wait to begin our married life together." "I certainly can," Connar sneers. "You may be pretty but I'd never even consider this if you didn't have money." Diana is hurt for a moment, but then smiles. "You're so funny, Connar... I love you." Connar rolls his eyes. They leave, and on arriving at the castle, after rejoicing that his daughter has returned to him, the king asks who Connar is. Diana tells him he's the son of an innkeeper and the man she is madly in love with. Connar must prove himself as a worthy heir (it is here that Zenobia intercedes to make the young man seem intelligent, because on his own he really is not leader material). The king is impressed, and agrees that the two should be wed at once. Diana practically glows with happiness in her long white gown, while Connar puts on a smile the whole day. That night, they are finally alone together, and Diana is just lying on top of the bed covers still in her wedding apparel, watching Connar with a wide smile on her face. "I can't believe we're finally married," she says. "We'll be together for life. I can't wait." "Just sit down, shut up, and don't bother me too much," Connar says nastily. "Baby, what's wrong?" Diana asks concernedly. "Nothing's wrong. You're already not doing what I just said." Diana clamps her mouth shut and nods compliantly. After several minutes of just staring at Connar's thin face, she whispers, "I love you so much." "I know you do," Connar says exasperatedly.
