Zenobia has to give Connar quite the temporary IQ boost to impress the king enough to let his daughter wed a lowly innkeeper's son, but it works, and they are married straightaway. Diana is hopelessly in love, and it's obvious every moment of every day. She walks around with a dreamy smile on her face, either staring into space or staring at her husband. She lights up when he walks into the room, and when he gets ill or unhappy, she will not leave his side until his problems have left him (and even then she is reluctant to leave him—if it were possible, she would spend every waking moment with him). After half a year, she gives birth to her and Connar's first child, a girl whom they name Emmaline. Diana cares deeply for her daughter, but there is no room in her heart to love anyone but Connar, and with all the time she devotes to her husband, she doesn't have much left to show her care for her daughter anyway. Emmaline is three years old when her first brother is born. And over the course of another six years, they are joined by three more children. Diana never has time for any of them. It's good that, while Connar doesn't get any smarter, he is a loving father—another thing that she constantly admires about him. And admiring is about the only thing she has time for. She lives to please him. If he wants something that's all the way across the castle, instead of sending a potentially slow maid, she will run and retrieve it herself. She is continually told that is not a princess's place, but she can't help herself. At night, she sometimes lies awake, just staring at Connar lovingly. If he's away on business or hunting—she can never manage to weasel her way into coming with him—her heart aches with longing and she hardly eats for yearning for him. And when he comes back, her heart nearly gives out for her joy.
