Diana goes through her days in a fog. Thinking through her sleepiness is just too difficult, and on top of it all, after a while she realizes that she's starting to become more like a child. She's terrified of creepy crawlies and things that go bump in the night, and she often seeks the witch as a source of comfort. Her mind is turning into that of a young child, like her body inexplicably has. It's too exhausting and painful to try thinking about the life that she remembers but is told wasn't real, so, eventually, she comes to a point where she must make a decision on which identity she wants to keep: that of Diana, the lonely young woman who got lost in a cave, or Brigid, the very young daughter of a witch. She can't keep trying to be both.
