In Which Diana Affirms Her Diana-ness

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 103846

The girl chooses to believe her own memories instead of what the witch tells her. She could easily have been the one to do this to her in the first place, in fact. Diana feels good for a while, having decided who she is.

But with this decision, life becomes a constant struggle. Because everything around her is telling her that she is Brigid. Every time the witch says that name, she tries to remember to think Diana in defiance. She acts as mature as she can manage, given the circumstances—which gets very difficult, because over time she forgets how. Whenever she is presented with any kind of evidence of her life in this castle, she tries to tell herself it's a lie.

It's exhausting work, honestly, and it results in her sleeping up to three days straight most times she goes to bed. And on top of all the naps she takes—she spends maybe one-fourth of her life awake, and before she knows it one year has flown by.

She resolves to leave immediately, some time when the witch isn't at home. She goes to the marketplace every month or so, which is pretty much the only time she leaves. So, Diana packs a bag, hides it cleverly under her bed, and waits for that marketplace visit.

She leaves shortly after the witch does, and when she steps outside the front door into the light...

  1. It feels like she runs straight into a wall, though there is nothing there.
  2. Nothing happens. She keeps walking, and leaves the witch's land.
