Efficiency Experts . . .

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 48963

Inquirer

A young woman, who would be pretty if she didn't look so very stern, a handsome elderly man with grey hair and beard, and what looks like a Sikh in traditional attire get out of the carriage. Must say that I somehow get a feeling that the last one is not exactly thrilled with his present occupation, though he tries to hide it.

Well, cannot always get the best jobs out there. One has to do what needs to be done to make ends meet, I suppose. I just wonder just what kind of employers this English couple (by their appearence and bearings) make. Whether or not his slight scowl at being tasked with carrying the luggage is warrent . . .

"Uh, I would be a little more careful lifting that way," I call out, concerned, putting on the English accent I said I would put on at the outset (to better blend with the natives of England). "Done enough labor efficiency studies to know that that is the worst way, causing the largest amounts of back injuries that way, sir! Lift with the knees and not the back, our you shall really put yourself in a bad way!"

We'd already agreed that as a cover story what occupation each of us "adults" had . . . if not exactly just why our "children" were in tow . . .

Right now, though, I'm more concerned for my fellow sentient being . . . He's going to hurt himself if he keeps that up!

Nemo

Bah! I sneer silently, ignoring this . . . Englishwoman who dares tell me how to best lift luggage!

I might be presently reduced to playing the part of servant-- insufferable enough as that is!-- doing the tasks of some low-caste punkah- wallah! But I Nemo should be told the best MECHANICAL advantage for lifting when I DESIGNED and BUILT the Nautilus?! By some . . .

Grinding my teeth, I ignore this . . . woman and lift the best way I . . .!

. . . .

!!!

"Oh Gods," I whisper hoarsely as I feel something . . . give a sharp stabbing pain, dropping all the bags I had held!

Strange how things sometimes work. Where something should work perfectly well one moment should be baneful the next? Like something similar to where Nemo is able to shoot a harpoon gun earlier in this adventure that knocked two grown (and angered) Middle Easterners who'd been chasing (rather hotly) after both his present associates twenty feet back, WITHOUT the recoil knocking him down in the process. . . .

Remember that ol' saw: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction?" Well, that's . . .

Well . . . we already know that physics (this entire universe, really) of this realm is changing across the board. Rather rapidly changing, really at ALL levels. Also, hand in hand, because of the nature of "the Change" . . . . Depending on certain factors determines how noticable the event is! As for Nemo . . . the abrupt change IS VERY noticable to him! Nemo had the bad luck of getting caught in a bad way when the change to the physics of simple mechanical advantage changed (as his back can attest right now).

. . .

Good thing the change hadn't happened when he'd fired off that harpoon gun, else the recoil (as per what the physics WE are familiar with) would have slammed him into the Nautilus' hull rather violently! So violently it might have snapped his neck!!

Yeah. Changes in physics due to universes touching. In this cast the physics of this reality (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) touching the Whovian reality . . .

So to does the same thing that had brought grief to so many floating ships back on Mars (re: 46487) happens here, in small, to one person (Nemo). If Nemo had waited one minute more, his . . . mechanical knowledge would have translated over to know the best way to avoid back injuries (i.e. the "Change" can sometimes alter a person's memories and such) . . . but he'd got caught in that awkward period.

Right now, between curses his mind suddenly is asking itself how in the name of all the gods did he think that the way he was . . .

Well, you get the idea . . .

Sigin

"Hey, take it easy there mate!" I say, affecting an Austrailian accent. "Sit down before you make it any worse than you already have it! Fred, old boy! Get out my kit!"

  1. And B'elanna and Elrondir go and scout about with tricorders to find out where that material is! I add, taking advantage of the situation by this distraction.
