The Never Ending Quest - Episode 46579

The Doctor

"Chi's got a problem . . . ," Chiana begins. "Remember that she said that she was having memory problems with remembering the exact details of what exactly happened that landed her as a Champion?"

"What?" Betty asks, alarmed. "Something wrong? It's getting worse?"

That is a rather alarming thought, that! I admit that it had been disturbing to hear that, but hadn't we already determined that it had been a side effect all that power thrown about by both Khaos and Q. Tests that Sigin had run had said in time it would mostly clear up, though parts of it would be lost. Now, I'm vastly simplifying things there (and sorry to say I fear that I must admit that some I am not up on, being that I'm NOT a medical doctor), but that is what it boiled down to, you see.

. . .

Pardon the shudder, but with the Time Lords we are defined . . . Well, I should say our beliefs have us defined by our memories. This business of actual ghosts existing had been . . . disquieting to me, but that's besides the point. I'm just saying that I rather don't fancy the thought of anything putting a person's memory (in part or in whole) beyond their grasp.

It's a Time Lord belief thing (at least for this version of the Doctor you may have seen from that BBC show: Doctor Who). Rather . . . dry and involved. Something we needn't go into right now.

"Surely it isn't that my dear?" I ask, taking her hand in mine.

. . .

Old habits like good manners and concern for women are hard to break, so don't slight me for it.

"Uh, no! Not at all," the young Oriental dragoness blinks, clearly taken aback by the concern. "It's just that the mental blocks go further back than you all knew."

We learn that she hadn't told us about her instinctive knowledge being locked away because she had thought it would have to be learned. Something akin to how infant Earth birds named eagles supposedly learn. That is, by jumping off a cliff and flapping (and praying she'd learned before she hit the ground below).

Actually, there is more to dragonflight than just the mere flapping of wings. It has to do with harvesting their innate magical powers (which, by the way, is the same power that evolves into spell casting ability on their induction into "wyrmhood").

Meaning that if she had continued on with it and tried that particular stunt, she'd have left a dragon sized crater in the ground. . .

Well, there must be something done about this, honeymoon or no. She is one of my Companions and nothing less shall do!

Sigin (the most qualified for this next task) goes and does a more thorough examination of the young dragoness this time, and his findings confirm everything Chi had said. He goes onto to say while the mental blocks will fade in time, it wouldn't do at all!

"It's her birthright now," Sigin says softly. "And may I add I cannot begin to even teach her the smallest cantrip until those instincts are unlocked . . ."

Oh dear. I know what that look means. It means that our rather stubborn dragon mage will NOT budge until his newest pupil--he'd taken her on somewhere between the time I had been doubled teamed by Chiana and Aeryn Pip into taking Chi on as a Companion and now--gains that ability.

Dragon custom, some things not even a Time Lord can change. Besides, somehow it just doesn't seem right that a dragon cannot fly (or breath fire).

Then there is the question of Time Lord custom. Last time around we had agreed to spend our Honeymoon using her customs. This time, after I had agreed to this . . . little experiment concerning Xanth's special nature (hint: eventually we may want to have children), we had agreed to do it THIS time by my kind's customs for honeymoons.

. . .

Are we EVER going to get to Xanth? Inquirer asks, annoyed but amused at the same time.

Just a little insight for those asking about Time Lord honeymoon custom (something I bet the BBC never covered). It is rather like the Earth Custom of double dating. Or should I say "Triple Dating". The third married couple is B'Elanna and Elrondir and while THEY aren't technically on a honeymoon, it's the act of coming along that's the thing for Time Lord custom. That and the second couple (made up of Sigin and Chiana) . . . Without the second couple, it wouldn't be Time Lord custom.

I could try scaring UP another couple (Eternity Inc has LOTS of married folk in it, as you might have seen). However . .

Wouldn't do to not help, Inquirer sighs. Friends and Companions in need and all that . . .

Yes, but it WOULD be nice to actually DO the . . . actual honeymoon thing. . .

Wait, just had an idea!

"Sigin, did you not say that you and Synizn had dragon friends from the Orient?" I ask. "Ones you had said was a bit more . . .skilled at healing memory?"

Sigin

Hm, there IS that thought. Only the good Lord only knows just how long, exactly, that'll take.

. . . .

And noble intentions and reflexes aside I . . . did make a promise.
