Betty blinked up at the startled face of the ambulance technician,
wondering what the hell had just happened... Had she imagined it all? The
woman who looked just like Doctor Who's Master (except for being
completely different, of course), the weird drunken woman in medieval dress,
yet another avatar of Death... None of it made much sense to her. Come
to that nothing that had happened recently had made a great deal
of sense. Maybe the Weaver lookalike was right. Maybe this all was
just some sort of computer simulation. It seemed like as good an explanation
as any...
"Are... are you... are you all right?" said the ambulance guy, interrupting her (admittedly not very linear) train of thought. "Yeah," she replied without thinking... Then did a double-take. "Wait a minute... You heard me!" She finally registered her surroundings, the fact that she was half stuffed into a body bag... Frantically, she patted her hands down her body. It felt solid. She felt for a pulse. Her heart was beating. "I'm alive!" "You weren't a minute ago," said the paramedic, looking confused. "I would have sworn..." Well, this didn't make a great deal of sense either, of course, but
Betty figured that dead people coming back to life was really no more improbable
than ghosts or magic or fictional characters appearing in her living room,
so she decided she wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. She
was alive again, and no longer doomed to follow Fred and Astra all around
creation, and that was good enough for her.
