A quick recap before we proceed with the story. Jarlath, Astra 9,
Annafrid, Artizza, Fertal and Manbear Synizn are all helping the
bearwoman, Alicia 4, with her Validation Quest. They are in the land of
Narnia, looking for someone called Winifred (formerly a Fred before her
recent transformation into a woman). They have to take her through a
magical wardrobe that will lead into England during World War 2.
But an intervention from a Scott from Game 3 has prevented things in Narnia going as they had in the books of CS Lewis. The witch Jadis has gone missing, leaving her forces of evil at a loss, and bringing a sudden spring to the land. That might sound good. But the changes have also resulted in the semi-divine leader of the forces of good, the lion Aslan who has befriended Winifred, falling into a coma not long after he had brought her back to his headquarters. Winifred, who though now a woman still has all her old leadership qualities, has taken over until Aslan recovers (though his recovery seems far from certain). Artizza: As we trek through the rapidly melting snow, taking the direction that the bearwoman's wand has indicated, we discuss what could be the cause of the sudden thaw. We have naturally done some research in Nantucket's public library before setting out, so are familiar with the story of Narnia as told in Lewis's books. "It seems that Aslan must have overcome and destroyed the Witch rather sooner than the books would have indicated," Jarlath suggests. "That ought to make this quest much easier." It turns out that he is wrong, of course. When a wisp of smoke is seen rising above the trees not too far away, Fertal and myself are the obvious choices to go and investigate. Stealth comes naturally to us. There's a good chance that Winifred may be there, since it's on the right bearing, but it's always wise to be cautious. We can't rule out the possibility that the smoke is being produced by a group of the Witch's forces.
