Synizm smiles as he watches the golems head off into the jungle to
establish yet another one of their . . . containment outposts. As far as
he could tell, these golems went for camaflauged outposts, and not already
established positions like these cities. Something to do with being "too
tempting for bombing runs." Yet another thing to share with the young dragon
slayer . . . .
I saved you from the Enemy sky patrols that would have started up
at this base, were-fox. Your ship wouldn't have stood a chance against
me in my old form and you sure as Tiamat's flames couldn't have handled
the firepower of an Enemy aircraft! the former dragon thinks. I
was able to fool them into thinking I was also from the Pack. I was even
able to get them to see that my dragon brothers and sisters weren't responsible
for the madness that Minestus unleashed. Now, for some talking with you.....
He remembered how angry the golems had been to find themselves to have
been duped by the Enemy. As far as the were-bear could tell, the Enemy
had indeed contacted Minestus, and given him the template for the disease
that had swept this world (after a lot of magical adjustments that is).
The Enemy had known how the Golems would react, and hadn't been wrong.
The Golems diverted resources to hunt down and exterminate every last dragon.
Damn Minestus for falling for such a trap. And damn the Golems for falling
for such a ruse!
Synizm had found out several things from a damning slip the Golems had
made. Apparently, these golems had much too learn about magical items (as
how they could be disguised as ordinary, mundane items. Also, apparently
he and his fellow magic users had much to learn about the "magic" of these
golems. Apparently, they weren't aware how a belt pouch could be turned
into a translating device. Otherwise, why would they have been so free
in their speach....
" . . . . . and you see, they don't seem to know that we are listening
in to their conversations." one Golems says in his own tongue. "They think
that the translator box only translates."
"Good thing, because the Enemy has made inroads into this area .
. . ." the other Golem laughs in his own tongue. "Well, at least we were
able to pinpoint the latest incursion. These primitives do come in handy......"
Apparently, the Golem's "magic" was more versatile than was previously
believed. Who thought that a magical item could be active for so long (years,
according to snatchs of conversation that the former dragon had overheard)!
Stomach growling, the were-bear stops and pulls from his pouch some
berries. Strange how he had grown to love these little things.....

The were-bear steps up
to the docks and waves at Fred's ship.....
