It's not really so much a question of being brave as of taking the line of
least resistance and hoping for the best. You let Annabelline push you out
of the door. Then you look around to take in your surroundings.
Unfortunately the passage that you stand in (in your floor-length but low-cut gown of heavy silk) is deserted. The servant James must have already gone about his other duties. You had been hoping that he would escort you to the dining-room, since one of the many things that the princess hasn't had time to tell you is where it is located. Reluctantly, afraid of angering the princess - and worse still Maggie - you go back into her room, intending to ask her the way. But the room is deserted! Clearly she and Maggie haven't wasted any time. You assume that they must have left by magic; there wasn't time for anything else. You sigh and go back out into the corridor. You need to find your way to the dining-room with reasonable speed, if you aren't to risk annoying the king by your lateness. You recall that the princess's room is three floors up. [131] The dining-room will presumably be on the first floor [using the American convention for floor numbering], so you need to find some stairs leading down.
